QUERÉTARO, Qro., March 12, 2023.- Between 2013 and 2015, the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) began to register an increase in the number of women admitted.
Amadeo Lugo Pérez, academic secretary of the Faculty, indicated that there was a greater number of men, but almost a decade ago an increase in the participation of women began to be observed.
Men and women are required to take and pass the same exams to enter any public university, the same case that occurs in Medicine, which is one of the faculties with the highest demand.
“This is a highly competitive university to be able to enter any of its degrees, of its careers, but particularly that of Medicine. In Medicine, to give you an idea, in each call, which is every semester, we have around two thousand applicants who want to enter a preparatory course… the 60 best averages are those who enter and I’m talking regarding averages, not I speak if they are men, if they are women,” he stressed.
Of the two thousand people who request a space each semester, only 3 percent remain, approximately 60. Of those people who specify a place, more and more women are observed, in such a way that the 2023 generation entered 61 people, 17 men, 44 women, an approximate ratio of 30 percent, once morest 70 percent.
He considered that the figures are not surprising, they reflect the way in which society is made up, since approximately 48 percent are men and 52 percent are women.
A similar situation was recorded in Dentistry, of 30 people who entered, 10 were men and 20 women.
“Whether they are men or women who enter is only, for us, a statistical issue,” he stated.
Almost 90% of those who enter manage to finish their career.
Being full-time students, who are also required to build their character. Responding well to one’s own frustrations and the pain of others are among the topics that are addressed during the degree; These are essential elements to carry out their work, face painful situations, deal with patients, as well as their relatives or companions; It is also important that they know how to manage their own emotions, which is why they are supported through the psychopedagogy department.
There is an increase in the number of women in specialties that were previously sought primarily by men, for example, surgical specialties: general surgery, neurosurgery, as well as traumatology and orthopedics. Before, women had a preference for clinical specialties: pediatrics, dermatology, internal medicine; surgical, gynecology.
To enter a medical specialty, you must also be among the best averages in the National Medical Residency Exam, which is held every September or October.
Between 50,000 and 60,000 general practitioners in the country apply, on average, in recent years, between 15,000 and 20,000 people have remained.
He stressed that men and women have the same opportunity to enter these specialties, as long as they manage to be among the best profiles.
