Every year again toilet dilemma: There are still no toilets on the Salzach, gastronomy has to make up for the shortage

“There is an urgent need for a solution to the situation.”

Anna Schiester

City Councilor

Toilet at the Staatsbrücke closed for years

A similar situation can be seen with his colleagues in gastronomy. On the opposite side of the Salzach, Evelyn Brandstätter, owner of the Café Bazar, confirms the high frequency of toilet visitors: “We feel very strongly that there are not enough toilets. When we are asked, we cannot say no.”

In the immediate vicinity there is a toilet facility at the Staatsbrücke. But it has been closed for a long time, which the owner cannot understand: “The toilet problem is a big one in the city. If there is a public toilet at the Staatsbrücke anyway, I wonder why it is not used.” Opening this would have been “a wonderful solution” for the city councilor, she explains, but: “The point on the Staatsbrücke is narrow and therefore too dangerous to open and close the toilet door. That’s why it was unfortunately closed years ago .”

“nice toilet” could solve situation

Because nothing came of the ecological rental toilets, municipal councilor Kay-Michael Dankl (KPÖ plus) raised the toilet debate again. If the toilets cannot be increased, alternatives are needed, he says. As an example, he cites the “nice toilet” system, which is already commonplace in many German cities: the pubs open their toilets to everyone, and the city pays them compensation for this.

One advantage is that you don’t have to build ad hoc systems. When asked whether the system would also be practicable in Salzburg, he answered in the affirmative: “We also have parts of the city where there are no toilets. Above all, playgrounds and parks should be considered.” Dankl has already submitted an application to the municipal council for the introduction of the system. The answer is still pending.
