On Monday, March 25, several commemorative events will be held in memory of the victims of the deportation of March 25, 1949, the Riga City Council communications department told LETA.
On Monday at 10 a.m. a minute of remembrance will take place at Shkirotava station. It will be attended by the youth choir “Balsis”, students of the Riga Basic School of Folk Crafts named following Oskar Kalpaks and Jaunsargi, as well as representatives of the society of the repressed and the leadership of the Riga City Council.
At 13.00, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Latvian Association of the Politically Repressed will organize a ceremony in memory of the victims of the communist genocide of the year at the memorial to the victims of the Soviet occupation “A Touch of History” on Latvian Riflemen Square.
After the ceremony there will be a procession to the Freedom Monument to lay flowers. The National Guard’s choir “Stars” will sing at the Freedom Monument.
At 6 p.m., the Small Guild will host the “Open Window” concert, and from 7 to 8 p.m., a concert in memory of the victims of the communist genocide in the Dome Cathedral, at which Mozart’s “Requiem” will be performed.
Events in memory of the victims of the communist genocide will be held in all regions of Latvia.
On March 25, 1949, more than 42,000 Latvian citizens were deported to Siberia.
