Even Mild, See Why It’s Important to Report Monkeypox Symptoms | Health

To date, 92 countries have confirmed 35,275 cases of
monkey pox
. In Colombia, the National Institute of Health reported that, as of August 15, there are 129. Most of the cases have been diagnosed in Bogotá.

“The profile of this outbreak continues to be predominantly sexually active adult men who have sex with men. It must be remembered that although it is predominant in more than 90%, there are also cases in women and children and it can occur in anyone”, says Alfonso Rodríguez-Morales, president of the Colombian Association of Infectious Diseases.

Most infections remain mild and resolve without treatment. Hence, as the outbreak progresses, control becomes more difficult because many people may not seek care; only those who present serious pictures.

“Ocular complications, superinfections in the skin by bacteria, there may be dissemination and produce sepsis, among other complications,” explains the expert.

According to the WHO, in terms of deaths, only 12 have been reported worldwide.

Vaccine supplies remain limited, which is why the countries of the Americas have already approved a resolution to support equitable access in our continent, where 36% of the world’s cases are concentrated.
