Liaqat Habib Anwar of Mardan, who has been playing the clarinet for the past 30 years, loves his instrument despite the fact that his earnings have dwindled over time.
Liaquat said that he got his passion for playing the clarinet and music from his elders.
‘My father was a good musician, he played the dholak and tabla well, which instilled in me a passion for music as a child.’
He said that as a child he used to play the musical instruments in the house secretly from his father because his father wanted him to study.
‘After studying, I learned to play the clarinet and also play other musical instruments.’
Liaquat said that it is a European device and is made in Germany. “It is also available in Sialkot, but the original and durable clarinet is from Germany, which costs 30 to 40 thousand rupees.”
He said that when it gets damaged, he himself goes from Mardan to Sialkot and gets it repaired with the help of a friend.
‘First the new clarinet was available. Now the new one is not coming and people are ordering it from outside.’
He said that just as Harmoninum has three notes, Mansat, Mandirst and Tarast, it also has notes.
He said that it has so much sweetness that it was very popular even in ancient times.

The clarinet is still included in the music of famous Pashto singers Khayal Mohammad, Hidayatullah and Shah Wali Afghan.
Liaquat Habib said that he plays Pashto, Punjabi and Sindhi songs with him.
‘Our work is about happiness. Where there is joy there is music, but they do not play it during the holy Islamic months.’
Retired as a clerk in the education department, Liaqat also works in the arts.
“In the past, when films were screened in cinema halls, I used to paint their advertisement boards. I can still draw with a pencil.’
He said that he was hired as a clerk because of painting.
