Evandermidfielder of Portland Timberswas chosen as the Player of the Matchday 12 of the 2023 season of the MLSbrought to you by Continental Tire.
Evander recorded the first double of, including the goal in his team’s 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday 13 May.
Evander currently leads the Portland Timbers in goals (four) and goal contributions (six) this season, despite only starting seven of the season’s 12 games. In addition, he is the first Portland Timbers player with multiple goals in consecutive games since Sebastián Blanco did it between November 3 and 7, 2021.
After Franck Boli scored the first goal following 79 seconds of play, Evander scored the second goal of the match in the 18th minute. The goal came following a fantastic sequence of passes between the Brazilian, Santiago Moreno and Juan Mosquera (See here).
Despite the visitors’ discount, Portland regained the lead in the 54th minute with a play full of magic, when Evander shot from 20 meters away to score his second goal (See here).
Evander is the first Portland Timbers footballer to win Player of the Matchday recognition since Sebastián Blanco did so on Matchday 11 in 2022.
Portland will look to extend its four-game unbeaten streak when it travels to face Real Salt Lake at America First Field on Game 13 on Wednesday, May 17 (9:30 pm ET, MLS Season Pass).
The MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire is selected each regular season matchday through media and fan voting in a process conducted by the MLS Office of Communications. A panel of journalists from North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprise 75 percent of the vote, while the Twitter fan vote accounts for the remaining 25 percent of the vote. NASR is made up of members from print, television, radio, and online media.
