Evacuation at Faculty of Medicine: False Alarm Causes Nearly 500 People to Leave Building

Nearly five hundred people, including teachers and students, were evacuated around eleven this morning from the Faculty of Medicine when the fire system’s alarms went off. Most people were at the two meeting points that were established at the doors of the center and in the car park.

At first, most people thought it was a prank; but then concern grew when the decision was made to leave the building. Minutes following this protocol, police and firefighters from Santander arrived, as well as technical personnel from the University of Cantabria (UC). First they went to the cafeteria, as that was where the kitchen alarms started ringing; although the warning immediately spread the signal throughout the center.

After a few minutes of inspection, the fire crews confirmed that the installation was in order, that there were in fact no fire or gas installation problems. It is currently unknown what may have failed in the system to trigger the alerts.

“Fortunately it was nothing more than a scare and now we can all go back to the classrooms,” confirmed the dean, Samuel Cos, as the firefighters announced that the site was safe and classes might continue as normal.

Students and teachers evacuated, and returned to classrooms following Javier Cotera

In the cafeteria kitchen, the technicians continued to study the installation minutes later. – We do not know exactly what might have triggered the alarms because the specialists have opened and closed the entire gas installation and have not noticed any leaks, says Íñigo Casafont, student and infrastructure coordinator at the Faculty of Medicine. “Now we have to carry out a more detailed study to see what has happened, and whether it was perhaps a sensor that has failed.”
