Euthanasia of a young man who contracted a serious illness shocks Colombia

Bogotá, Aug 30 (EFE).- Javier Acosta, a 36-year-old Colombian fan of the Millonarios team, was euthanized on Friday after a serious illness left him in a wheelchair a few years ago and recently worsened with no guarantees of recovery.

His story and the video he recorded himself went viral throughout Colombia, causing great commotion and solidarity with the young man, and dozens of fans and hooligans of the capital team came today to the doors of the San Ignacio hospital in Bogotá to say goodbye and accompany him during the procedure.

“My name is Javier Acosta, I’m a fan of Millonarios and yesterday I made a decision for my life and today I say goodbye to friends and family in a big way. Hang in there, crazy people,” the young man posted on his social networks.

This young man from Bogotá was left in a wheelchair nine years ago after a traffic accident, and contracted a bacteria in a swimming pool that caused a serious infection that spread to his bones, an illness that they were unable to control and he ended up developing blood cancer, he told Noticias Caracol.

Acosta was “waiting for a miracle,” and doctors told him in recent days that there would be no possible treatment. “Friends, I tell you badly that there will be no miracle, that there is no other chance,” the young man explained in a video with a lump in his throat.

After five years of fighting the disease, the treatments had no effect and the cancer began to develop in his head. As he was no longer able to walk, the young man decided that he would rather undergo euthanasia than live in a hospital waiting for the cancer to end his life.

For this reason, the young man, father of a 12-year-old girl, made the decision this past Monday to opt for euthanasia, which is legal in Colombia in cases of terminal, serious or incurable illness, and which was carried out this Friday.

“Life is over and I’m doing the ‘live’ to say goodbye to everyone because later I won’t have the strength to tell them. (…) It’s not easy to have an infection like this,” said the young man in one of his last videos.

Radamel Falcao García even became interested in the case, calling him when he was in the clinic and telling him that he would dedicate to him the first goal he scored with the Bogotá team’s jersey, which he joined this semester.
