The Eurovision organizers put a stop to the voices in favor of Israel’s exclusion from this year’s contest today (15.02.2024).
Contrary to the decision to exclude her of Russia following her invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Eurovision organizers ruled out such a possibility for the Israel.
“Comparisons between wars and conflicts are complex and difficult and as a non-political media organisation, it is not for us to make them,” European Broadcasting Union (EBU) director-general Noel Keren told AFP.
He said the EBU is “aware” of voices favoring Israel’s exclusion from this year’s contest, in which the country will be represented in May by performer Eden Golan.
“However, the Eurovision Song Contest is a non-political musical event and a competition between public broadcasters, members of the EBU. This is not a competition between governments,” Keren said.
According to newsit, in the case of Israel, according to him, “our governing bodies … concluded that the Israeli public broadcaster Kan met all the rules of the competition for this year and that it might participate as it has for the past 50 years ».
Instead, Keren said “in the case of Russia, the participation of the Russian broadcaster had been suspended by the EBU due to its systematic failure to meet its obligations as a member and breach of public service values”.
He also stressed that the relationship between the public broadcaster Kan and the Israeli government is “fundamentally different” from that between Russian TV and Moscow, noting that the Israeli government has “threatened in recent years to close the broadcaster.”
