With this qualification of ten additional candidates, the 26 countries that will participate in Saturday’s final are now known.
The second and last semi-final of Eurovision 2023 has just ended in Liverpool, following more than two hours of show. Of the sixteen candidates who competed, ten won a place in the final, scheduled for this Saturday in the English city.
The countries that emerge victorious from this second evening of qualifications are Albania, Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium, Austria, Lithuania, Poland, Australia, Armenia and Slovenia. Conversely, those which have been eliminated are Denmark, Romania, Greece, Iceland, Georgia, and San Marino.
They join the ten countries that qualified for the first semi-final on Tuesday: Finland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Moldova, Israel, Switzerland, Croatia, Portugal, Serbia and Norway. .
In all, 26 countries will compete on the Eurovision stage this Saturday. Because in addition to the 20 countries qualified this week, six have automatically qualified since the start of the competition: the five largest financial contributors, called the “Big Five” (France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain), as well as the country that won the previous edition, Ukraine this year.
Change of rules
The 2023 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest brought major changes to how the two semi-finals work. For the first time, the participants were decided solely by public vote, instead of the mix of public vote and professional juries in place since 2009.
Another revolution: this year, for the first time, countries that do not participate in the competition were able to vote. The votes of these countries were combined into a block, which has the same weight as a participating country.
The big favorites of this 2023 edition
Two days before the final, a leading pack stands out: the ranking of punters predicts that France, represented by La Zarra and his song Obviously, will come fourth. These same forecasts predict a third place for Ukraine and its duo Tvorchi.
The bookmakers seem very sure of themselves regarding the two candidates they see arriving at the top of the ranking: for weeks, the Finn Käärijä and the Swede Loreen have not left the second and first place, respectively. This Thursday, they lent no less than 49% chance to the latter to win.
