24% of first-time asylum seekers in the European Union were children under 18, according to Eurostat figures for 2023 released today.
In particular, in 2023 there were 254,900 children who applied for asylum for the first time in EU countries. Among these children, 17% were unaccompanied minors, corresponding to 4.1% of the total number of first-time asylum seekers. The most represented nationalities of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in the EU were Syrian (31.6%) and Afghan (30.1%).
Among EU countries, the highest proportion of children in the total number of first-time asylum seekers was recorded in Austria (34.7%), Luxembourg (34.4%) and Hungary (33.3%).
The highest proportion of unaccompanied minors in the total number of first-time asylum seekers was recorded in Bulgaria (17.2%), the Netherlands (15.2%) and Austria (9.1%).
44% of minor first-time asylum seekers came from Asia, 20.2% from European (non-EU) countries, 19.8% from African countries and 14.4% from countries in the Americas.
In 2023, EU countries granted protection status to 120,915 minor asylum seekers.
