Madrid: Researchers have found Europe’s oldest sandals in a bat roost in Spain. A 6200 year old sandal was found. The sandals and tools were found at Cueva de los Murcilagos, near the city of Granada, Spain.
The researchers stated in the journal Science Advances that this is the burial site of 19th century hunters. The shoes were dated by radiocarbon dating. Here are 22 sandals made of grass-like materials.
In the past, grasses were used to make sandals in North Africa. Earlier, researchers found that early humans made baskets, bags and sandals by crushing grasses. These are prepared following drying the grass for 20 to 30 days. Similar sandals have been found earlier in Armenia dating back 5500 years. The researchers stated that these were worn by the ancient man discovered in Italy in 1991.
The lack of moisture inside the cave is the reason why the artifacts have been preserved for so long. Less humid climates have facilitated the discovery of artifacts in Central Asia and the Dead Sea. Excavation of this cave started in 1857. The researchers also said that a large part of the artefacts were damaged due to excavation
