42.5% is the share of renewable energies in European production that should be ratified on Monday by the European Energy Council which is being held in Luxembourg. The ambassadors of the Union agreed on Friday on this objective and “it corresponds to the expectations of France” on the renewable energy directive, also called the RED III directive, estimates this Saturday the Minister for Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier- Runacher, in a press statement.
This diplomatic agreement, negotiated within the framework of Coreper, the body bringing together EU ambassadors in Brussels, confirms “a target of 42.5% renewable energies” in Europe’s energy consumption by 2030 This is more than France’s own target, which has set 40% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030, compared to 24% currently. Hydroelectricity, wind energy, solar energy, biogas… and nuclear energy which, according to Agnès Pannier-Runacher, is included in the directive under Europe’s decarbonisation objectives, which will not fail to anger environmental organisations. The Climate Action Network had notably accused Paris of having “scuttled the text on the pretext that it would not be favorable enough to hydrogen produced from nuclear power”.
Member States had been posting their differences on the subject for many months. The opposition between pro and anti-nuclear had materialized by the creation of a nuclear alliance by France, bringing together regarding fifteen States, facing Germany, Spain and the supporters of renewable energies, despisers of the ‘atom.
