European Union may be about to mandate removable batteries in cellphones

The European Parliament is close to deferring a decision that obliges cell phone manufacturers to implement removable batteries in their smartphones once more. This component had its access restricted to users a few years ago and there are no recent cell phones that make it possible to remove the Lithium Ion cell from the structure of the device.

According to information, the intention of the Council of the European Union is to create a regulation that “reinforces the sustainability rules for batteries”, thus encouraging the correct disposal of batteries and ensuring that they are “safe, sustainable and competitive” in the devices that enable removal.

According to Samsung, the expectation of the South Korean is that users will be able to remove the battery from their smartphones by mid-2027, however the company did not give details regarding its timeline. The EU Regulatory Commission has defined that brands have four years to adapt their hardware and design to comply with regulations.

The proposal defines that the portable battery is one that can be removed “by the end user […] with the use of commercially available tools and without the need for the use of specialized tools, unless provided free of charge, or proprietary tools, thermal energy or solvents to disassemble it.”.

This resolution shows that the battery does not necessarily need to be available to the user, but access is facilitated by the manufacturers through included accessories.
