The European Union announced this week the opening of a formal investigation once morest Chinese retailer AliExpress. According to representatives of the bloc, there is suspected of selling illegal productsincluding even the sale of counterfeit medicines.
The European Commission also sent a formal request for information to the local AliExpress branch, all of which follows the new Digital Services legislation (DSA).
Commenting on the matter, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Industry, highlighted that the DSA is not just for social networks.
The law also seeks to ensure the withdrawal of illegal or unsafe products sold in the EU through e-commerce platforms, including the growing number of fake and potentially dangerous medicines and pharmaceuticals.
The commissioner also said that AliExpress has until November 27th to comment on the matter and present measures that prevent not only medicines, but also other illegal products from entering the European Union.
Citing an example, Thierry Breton said that the European Medicines Agency discovered that several fake injections of Ozempic, a medicine used for diabetes and which has become very popular among those looking to lose weight, are circulating around the bloc.
Suspicions are that these fake injections are being sold on AliExpress, and the low price may be attracting many Europeans. Finally, the executive believes that the platform must collaborate.
We want to know how AliExpress will comply with obligations related to risk assessments and mitigation measures to protect consumers online, in particular with regards to the spread of illegal products online, such as fake medicines.
