European Union hopes that the elections in Venezuela are democratic

The European Union expressed its hope that the presidential elections in Venezuelawhich will take place on July 28, develop in a democratic climate.

Elisa Ferreira, European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, expressed during the plenary session of the European Parliament that the coalition wants the Venezuelan elections “reflect the democratic aspirations of Venezuelans”. His intervention was made on behalf of the head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrell, the agency reported. EFE.

Likewise, the delegate was part of a debate about the imprisonment of the lawyer and human rights activist Rocío San Miguel and General Héctor Hernández Da Costa, who was deprived of liberty in 2018 and his family and lawyers are denied the right to provide him with medical care.

Against repression

Ferreira regretted that “repression continues”referring to the capture of part of María Corina Machado‘s team.

“The European Union remains convinced that the repression of human rights and political freedoms must be addressed through a peaceful and democratic solution to the political crisis, which includes the holding of inclusive and competitive elections,” Ferreira added.

Likewise, he expressed that the European Union maintains its firm intention to work with Venezuelan civil society and the international community with the objective of achieving dialogue, moving towards democracy and recover respect for the rule of law and human rights.

«We will continue to closely monitor the situationincluding with the promotion of access to human rights mechanisms in Venezuela,” he reiterated.

Finally, regretted the position of Nicolás Maduro’s administration to expel the team from the technical office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
