In an official statement, European Union (EU) authorities announced that they have donated another 500 thousand euros to Cuba. In general, the European organization has allocated hundreds of millions of euros without any relief to the situation of the average Cuban.
On August 5, an official note from the EU indicated that they had provided humanitarian funding of €500,000 to “strengthen the health system in Cuba, focusing on the most urgent health needs of children, adolescents and women of reproductive age.”
This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), they said.
They added that this funding of 500 thousand euros from the European Union would be implemented in the provinces of Holguín, Havana and Sancti Spíritus, areas identified by the Cuban Ministry of Health as priority areas for improving maternal and child health services.
500 thousand euros more to Cuba
Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, EU ambassador to Cuba, stressed that “the funds will help strengthen local capacity to offer health services, improve access to essential medicines and medical equipment.”
According to the EU, they believe that the humanitarian aid will benefit around 30,000 people, including high-risk newborns, paediatric population, adolescents, pregnant women and women of reproductive age.
The funds would allow for the acquisition of medicines, medical supplies and equipment, and the improvement of sexual and reproductive health services. In addition, neonatal services would be strengthened, ensuring quality care for sick newborns and training for health professionals in comprehensive neonatal care.
Since 1994, the EU has invested more than €107.5 million in humanitarian projects in Cuba, of which 87% has been allocated to emergency responses such as droughts, floods, etc. Now, with €500,000 more, it remains one of the largest institutions donating money to the Cuban government.
