The Foreign Ministers of the European Union decided this Monday (02/19/2024) to start a new military operation to protect merchant ships in the Red Sea and neighboring maritime areas. Later, this information was confirmed by the European Commission: “I welcome today’s decision to launch Operation Aspides. Europe will guarantee freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, working together with our international partners,” said the President of the European Commission. , Ursula von der Leyen, in a message on the social network X.

Germany had already announced that it would participate in Operation “Aspides” with the deployment of a frigate.
