Teachers’ union representatives presented ten key European demands to the government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) on Wednesday morning to make teaching more attractive and remedy the shortage of teachers.
This meeting, which is part of the European Teachers’ Week organized by the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE), lasted one hour. Representatives of socialist, Christian and liberal education unions were able to speak with Minister-President Pierre-Yves Jeholet (MR), Minister of Education Caroline Désir (PS) and the new Minister of Higher Education Françoise Bertieaux (MR). According to Joseph Thonon of CGSP-Enseignement, the day’s discussion focused on teacher salaries and class sizes.
For its part, the government said it was well aware of the issue, while recalling the delicate budgetary situation of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
The shortage of teachers is a reality in many countries in Europe and elsewhere. This is why European unions have decided to lead this transnational campaign on the basis of common demands. To make the profession more attractive, they recommend in particular support for more professional autonomy, the granting of competitive salaries, greater support for teachers at the start of their careers and better consideration of issues of equality and diversity for the teaching staff. As a sign of support for the campaign, FWB teachers are invited to participate in a work stoppage at their school between October 4 and 13.
