The 2023 vaccination calendar has just been published on the occasion of European Vaccination Week, which is held this year from April 24 to 30. Two main novelties should be noted this year concerning vaccination against rotavirus infections and vaccination against seasonal influenza. Explanations.

Two new features in the 2023 vaccination schedule

The european vaccination week begins with the publication of the new vaccination schedule, which for this year 2023 includes two novelties concerning the vaccination of children. Overall, the vaccination schedule remains unchanged, with compulsory vaccinations for infants, compulsory or recommended vaccinations for professionals, recommended vaccinations for the general population and certain categories of people at risk, and vaccination recommendations for travellers.

The two novelties of the vaccination calendar relate on the one hand to rotavirus infections and on the other hand to seasonal influenza. It is now recommended that all infants be vaccinated against rotavirus infections, responsible for sometimes severe forms of gastroenteritis. The vaccination schedule depends on the vaccine used, two doses at 2 and 3 months for the monovalent vaccine and three doses at 2, 3 and 4 months for the pentavalent vaccine. The vaccination schedule must be complete before the age of 6 or 8 months depending on the vaccine used. Until then, vaccination against rotavirus infections only concerned certain categories of infants, who were more vulnerable to the consequences of gastroenteritis.

Santé Publique France develops information and promotion tools for vaccination

Second novelty, children from 2 to 17 years old, without comorbidities, can now be vaccinated against seasonal flu. To vaccinate children, the Haute Autorité de Santé recommends favoring the vaccine administered by nasal passage, even if the vaccines by injection can be administered in case of unavailability of the vaccine by the nasal route. In addition, certain vaccines may now be administered by health professionals other than doctors: pharmacists, nurses, midwives or even postgraduate medical or pharmacy students.

In parallel with the publication of the new vaccination schedule, Santé Publique France develops each year new tools pour informer et promote vaccination among the general public and health professionals. This year, several tools are available to everyone:

  • A postcard translated into several languages with the vaccination calendar;
  • A poster of the vaccination schedule;
  • Posters devoted to different themes associated with vaccination;
  • The vaccination record for teenagers and adults;
  • A pamphlet entitled “Understanding Vaccination” which provides an update on vaccination and the vaccine-preventable diseases;
  • Videos available on the Vaccination Info Service website and on the Public Health France YouTube channel.
