The European Commission on Friday gave the green light to the creation of Ethias Lease, a joint venture between the Belgian insurer and the Dutch subsidiary of the Spanish bank Santander. The joint venture will be active in the electric car leasing market.

Ethias Lease will target SMEs and public authorities. The company hopes to manage a fleet of 8,000 vehicles by 2027 and 6,000 charging points. The launch of Ethias Lease coincides with the entry into force of new Belgian tax rules aimed at encouraging the greening of company cars.

The European executive does not see any problem in terms of compliance with competition rules in the joint project. The impact of the project will have a limited effect on the structure of the market, according to the European Commission.
