The legal thriller “Anatomy of a Fall” by Frenchwoman Justine Triet is the big winner of the 2023 European Film Awards awarded in Berlin. A list that celebrates the freedom of creation and expression dear to Europe.

After Reykjavik last year, Berlin hosted, like every other year, the European Film Awards, prices created by the European Film Academy in the German capital in 1988, just before the fall of the wall, to highlight European cinema and its diversity.

Pour 2023, the competition was very strong, but it was “Anatomie of a Fall” by the Frenchwoman Justine Triet who won everything, with the Prizes for best screenplay, best direction and best film and the one for best actress for Sandra Hüller.

The story of a writer who finds herself suspected of the death of her husband and whose trial will expose her relationship and her identity as a woman.

“I think there is a freedom in Europe that must be preserved and protected and which is magnificent,” underlined Justine Triet, speaking to Euronews. “A freedom of expression, a freedom to really say what you think, which, in fact, is quite rare,” she indicated. “When you travel the world a lot, you realize that it’s very precious,” she insisted.

The “extraordinary work” des European Film Awards

Sandra Hüller also stars in “The Zone of Interest” (“La Zone d’intérêt”)a chilling film regarding the family life of the commander-in-chief of Auschwitz and which shows humanity in all its horror, without showing anything from the camp.

The film received nothing despite its excellence. Sandra Hüller prefers to emphasize the work of the European Film Academy which organizes these Awards.

“It’s extraordinary work, discreet but so important,” remarked the actress during the Berlin ceremony. “I think of all those who work in the shadows, magnificently, to bring us all together here, to make us meet and discuss interesting subjects,” she explained.

A reality “policy”

European subjects who take the pulse of the state of the world and of Europe.

So, “Green Border”, by Polish director Agnieszka Holland, shows, in a very realistic manner, the fate of migrants stuck between Belarus and Poland. A film which drew the wrath of conservatives and the Polish far-right. Here too, the film was nominated several times without winning anything…

“There are films that courageously tackle diverse subjects, and not just directly political ones,” declared the Polish director. “But at the same time, we live in a reality that is political regardless of the subject discussed,” she insisted.

“A subjective journey”

No prizes either for “Io Capitano”, “Me, Captain” by Matteo Garrone. The director of “Gomorr”a and “Dogman” delivers here a movie which puts us in the shoes of two young Africans who left everything and sacrificed to build a better future…

Here too, a committed film, but above all one which gives a large part to the human aspect.

“Cinema also tries to tell a story, to give the audience an experience,” stated Matteo Garrone, “to create in him an empathy with the characters and to give him the possibility of experiencing a subjective journey.”

Love according to Ari Kaurismäki

Finally, nominated but also empty-handed, “Fallen Leaves”a love film of infinite poetry.

And feature film directed by one of the major European authors, the Finnish Aki Kaurismäki.
