“Not only are we protected this winter, but we can safely say that the days of Russian oil and gas blackmail are over once and for all,” he told MEPs, in the debate on the Spanish presidency of the Council of the Union European, in which he also addressed the Israel-Hamas war and issues related to migration.
Regarding energy, the European leader welcomed the work to make it possible to stop dependence on fossil fuels from Russia, since imports are now less than 10% and also noted the joint purchases of gas, which reached 42 billion cubic meters.
The director also highlighted the decrease in prices, which are “almost ten times lower compared to the peak of the crisis” and the high levels of storage.
The strong investment in renewable energy was also welcomed, with the official mentioning that in Europe more electricity is currently produced through solar and wind energy, instead of gas, and pointing out that the agreement to reform the electricity market is almost finished. , which will allow for more stable prices.
