European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen flew on a private jet 23 times last year. According to the EU Commissioners’ Code of Conduct, private jets can only be used in exceptional cases.

Member of the European Parliament and leader of the German “Left” Martin Schirdevan published a corresponding document, noting that even the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell Over the past year, he made only two such flights. According to Shirdevan’s report, von der Leyen used a private jet three times last year to fly between Brussels and Strasbourg, although there is a fast train service on this route.

In 2021 and 2022, the President of the European Commission chartered a private jet 57 times. She attributed this to the fact that fewer scheduled flights were available at the time due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a shame that the President of the European Commission still uses a private jet despite the climate crisis,” Martin Shirdevan told Der Spiegel.

He said European Commission members and their staff should no longer be allowed to fly to destinations that can be reached within six hours by train.

“I think it’s presumptuous to encourage people with little money to save when they themselves use private jets to get from point A to point B,” the left-wing politician said.
