European Commission Investigates Increasing Customs Duties on Vehicles Imported from China – Protecting Europe’s Automobile Industry

STORY – At the end of an investigation carried out by the European Commission, the Union might decide to increase customs duties currently set at 10% for vehicles imported from China.

In two weeks, French and European executives went into commando mode to protect the Old Continent’s automobile industry in a more or less disguised manner. During the Paris Motor Show in October 2022, politicians had their backs to the wall. Carlos Tavares, the boss of Stellantis, loudly regretted that the event “rolls out the red carpet in front of Chinese manufacturers, who will come with attractive offers but opposed to the dynamic of reindustrialization of Europe“. BYD, Great Wall Motors, DongFeng and Geely came to exhibit their high-end electric vehicles at attractive prices.
