“The intention is not to impose tariffs per se… The goal is to correct the unfair situation that has arisen between EU and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers,” he added, commenting on the European Commission’s decision to impose initial import duties of up to 40% on Chinese electric vehicles.
The spokesman noted that the European Union supports “dialogue with Chinese partners and this dialogue is ongoing. We will not provide details now, but there are positive results.”
On Thursday, the European Commission announced that it will impose temporary initial duties on electric cars imported from China from July 4 due to government support for their production.
The initial duty means that suppliers must provide bank guarantees at this stage rather than actually paying the duty. The actual collection of the duty will start if the EU makes a final decision on imposing import duties, which might happen in the autumn.
The United States had announced an increase in customs duties on a number of Chinese goods worth a total of $18 billion. The duties on Chinese electric cars will increase from 25% to 100%. Washington justified this by saying that it seeks to protect the American electric car industry.
