European Commission chief rallies in India against Russia

Today, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned of the growing threats to open and free societies in Europe and Asia.

Von der Leyen’s warning came during a speech she delivered at a press conference in the Indian capital, New Delhi, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The warning is understood as an indirect appeal to the Indian government to reconsider its “neutral” position regarding the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

Referring to Western sanctions on Russia, von der Leyen said the EU calls on all members of the international community to support peace efforts. Until that moment, New Delhi did not classify Moscow as an aggressor country.

According to previous reports, the Europeans are increasing their arms supplies to India to make it less dependent on Russian imports.

Von der Leyen referred to Russia’s cooperation with China, which “contradicts” India’s interests in the Himalayas on the path of the common border, stressing that “what is happening in Ukraine has an impact on the Indo-Pacific region.”
