May 1st will be celebrated on a Monday, which means a long weekend, only good for a 3-5 day city-break outside the country. According to the online travel agency Vola.ro, flights to many European destinations are even cheaper than domestic travel, so tourists have many options to choose from for their mini-vacation.

For Romanian tourists who have not yet managed to book their May 1 mini-vacation, the agency’s team of specialists looked for the cheapest options with departures between April 27-30 and returns between May 1-7.

Thus, the cheapest last minute plane tickets are, in order of popularity, in the following destinations: Milan (average price: 76 euros), London (average price: 89 euros), Paris (average price: 77 euros), Brussels (price average: 83 euros), Bologna (average price: 76 euros), but also domestic destinations such as Bucharest (average price: 82 euros) and Cluj-Napoca (average price: 81 euros).

According to the specialists, this year, Romanians were foresight and organized their trips in advance, so as to take advantage of lower prices for the desired flights. Tickets were purchased, on average, 80 days for return flights before the departure date, a very inspiring measure, because if they had not booked them ahead of time and bought them last minute, they would have spent at least 50% more for the same flight.

According to Vola.ro, the cheapest return tickets in this mini-holiday are: Romania – Italy: 59 euros/person, Romania – Great Britain: 79 euros/person.

Also, the cheapest one-way tickets sold during this period are Romania – Italy: starting from 18 euros/person, Romania – Belgium: starting from 20 euros/person, Romania – Great Britain: starting from 20 euros/person , Romania – Austria: 22 euros/person, Romania – France: 23 euros. It should be noted that, in order to take advantage of lower prices, tickets were purchased, on average, 46 days before the departure date.

As for the days spent by Romanians at the destination during the mini-holiday of May 1, the average duration is 5 days, a sign that, during this period, tourists prefer shorter stays, a break of a few days to recharge the batteries. According to agency data, they travel like this: 58% of bookings are for one person, 24% of bookings are for two people, while only 18% of bookings are for a larger group (of more than three people).

Also, tourists prefer to travel only with hand luggage allowed in the cabin: only 5.3% of bookings also have checked luggage. Moreover, the purchase of checked baggage significantly increases the price of the plane ticket, the average being 67 euros more.

Last but not least, for the May 1st mini-holiday, Romanians prefer direct flights (74% of flights are direct) over those with stopovers. Since it is a short stay, they prefer to make the most of the time spent at the destination.
