For those who would not find what they are looking for in Belgium or who have already visited the markets of our country, it is easy to cross the border. We are obviously thinking of a weekend in Munich or Vienna, even Berlin, and why not a stay in New York? But for those who want to spend a day (or two) abroad without blowing their budget, we have focused on destinations a maximum of four hours’ drive from Brussels.
The closest Christmas market, regarding 1 hour 45 minutes away, is that of Maastricht, in the historic center, which will be held from November 30 to December 31. Less than 20 minutes’ drive away, we find Valkenburg, with a very small, but very family-friendly and magical Christmas market. Heading for France, in Lille, just two hours from our capital. In the old center, the chalets have offered an almost Germanic atmosphere since November 22, with a festive atmosphere worthy of the north of France.
The Christmas market season is launched: from Ostend to Durbuy, here are the best events to discover in Belgium
In Germany, Cologne is 2.5 hours from us and we experience the Germanic atmosphere that makes the German Christmas markets so successful from November 23 to December 23.
For those who want to take the train, London is only two hours by Eurostar from Brussels. You can spend a day there without any problem to discover the British Christmas atmosphere. There, there is not one, but at least 8 Christmas markets to discover throughout the major districts of the English capital. An atmosphere that sometimes reminds us of New York.
Five weeks of mulled wine, let’s go for the Winter Wonders in Brussels: “The cold is fine, the snow too, but please, no fleet”
Finally, even if we slightly exceed the four hour drive, we cannot miss the markets of Strasbourg or Colmar, in France. Unmissable for Christmas fans, even if you will have to plan a short night there to really enjoy it.
