In the pair skating short program at the European Championships in Kaunas, Sophia Schaller and Livio Mayr did not make it past last place among 18 duos and thus missed out on the top 16 free skate.

The Salzburg duo Schaller/Mayr missed their previous best score of 42.57 points by almost eight points and missed the top 16 freestyle by almost six points. Last year, the team coached by Severin Kiefer came twelfth out of 13 pairs at their joint European Championship premiere. On Thursday (12.15 p.m. CET) Olga Mikutina will try out the women’s short program.

The Georgians Anastasila Metelkina/Luka Berulava (71.30) took the lead among the pairs, somewhat unexpectedly, while the favorite among the men was Adam Siao Him Fa. With 94.13 points, the French defending champion received almost three points more than second-placed Swiss Lukas Britschgi.

With a buffer of a good two points, Maurizio Zandron made it into the European figure skating competition on Wednesday in Kaunas. The Tyrolean took 22nd place among 32 competitors in the short program with 65.47 points, and the top 24 reached the medal decision scheduled for Friday (5 p.m. CET).

Zandron fell on the Triple Axel, his first jump element, and then also showed some uncertainty on the Lutz. Although he otherwise got through his program quite well to the music of “L’ultima notte di Amore”, the prints were quite heavy. The 31-year-old remained more than 17 points below his record, which means that the targeted top 15 will hardly be achieved. Last year, the native of Bozen and Claudia Houdek’s protégé came in eleventh, by far his best European Championship placement to date.
