After the fifth of six disciplines, Sophie Weißenberg was fifth with 5462 points. In the javelin throw she came to 46.73 meters on Thursday (08/18/2022), it had gone better for her in the long jump. There she came to 6.35 meters. Hours later, Weißenburg got out of the heptathlon.

According to the German Athletics Association, the 24-year-old from Bayer Leverkusen suffers from cold and exhaustion symptoms.

In mid-July, Weißenberg voluntarily dropped out of the World Championships in Athletics in Eugene following making three failed attempts in the long jump in 14th place. At that time, the DLV announced that Weißenburg had dropped out “start the regeneration for the start of the European Championship now and save grains”. And now this.

Schäfer with best performance of the season in the javelin throw

This makes Carolin Schäfer the last remaining German in the field of participants. Day two was a successful one for her in the heptathlon, especially in the javelin throw. Carolin Schäfer had her best attempt right at the beginning. There shepherds 50.18 meters ahead – best performance of the season. Only the Hungarian Xenia Krizsan achieved an even better value with 50.38 meters.

In the overall standings, Schäfer is a strong seventh with 5366 points. This was not to be expected following the first competition of the day, the long jump. There Schäfer came to 5.82 meters, at that time she was tenth.

Thiam shows weaknesses – and yet leads

The favorite Belgian Nafissatou Thiam initially had some problems on day two. On her first try, she placed the spear next to the corridor. Her best attempt landed at 48.89 meters – almost eleven meters below her personal best.

Previously, Thiam had surprisingly only jumped 6.08 meters. In the overall standings, Thiam remains at the top with 5776 points, but their lead has narrowed. The Swiss Annik Kälin follows in second place with 5604 points. Co-favorite Anouk Vetter from the Netherlands, who had won Solber at the World Championships in Eugene, got out injured before the high jump.
