England’s women’s national soccer team has not only cleared the EM title at the home finals.
Striker Beth Mead was named player of the tournament following beating Germany 2-1 following extra time in the final at London’s Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The 27-year-old Arsenal club-mate of Manuela Zinsberger and Laura Wienroither played in all six games and scored six times. She was also number one in the shooting list.
Final victory following extra time: England wins European title
She secured the top scorer’s crown alone because she had more assists (5) than Germany’s striker Alexandra Popp, who had scored in every game before the final but had to miss the decisive game due to muscular problems. That is the first decision criterion with the same number of goals, following that the higher minutes would be decisive. Austria’s players scored three goals during the tournament with Katharina Schiechtl, Katharina Naschenweng and Nicole Billa.
Germany’s 20-year-old midfielder Lena Oberdorf was named the best young player at the European Championships in December.
Queen congratulates England team on the title

The 2-1 win following extra time in the final once morest Germany at London’s Wembley Stadium was an “inspiration for girls and women today and for future generations,” said the 96-year-old monarch on Sunday evening.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who watched the final of the European Women’s Football Championship live in the stadium, also congratulated the English team. “Congratulations to the Lionesses on the European Championship and to the DFB women for the world-class performance in a close game,” Scholz wrote on Twitter. “It was an exciting tournament and the whole of Germany is proud of this team.”
