In the preview video for the first round of the 2022 Diamond League tournament, ‘Radio Television Italiana’, an Italian public broadcaster, introduced Woo Sang-hyeok as “currently the world’s best high jumper and gold medalist at the Indoor World Championship.”
The ‘Diamond League’ is the second largest tournament organized by the International Athletics Federations following the World Championships. This year, it will be held as a final (grand final) following the 1st to 12th competitions. The first tournament will be held in Doha, Qatar on the 13th.

Italy’s national interest in the high jump is growing thanks to Gianmarco Tamberry, 30, who won the Tokyo Olympics last year. ‘Radio Television Italiana’ said, “Tamberry meets ‘friend and rival’ Mutaz Issa Barsim (31, Qatar) once more in the Diamond League. The two will compete with Woo Sang-hyuk.”
Barsim shared the gold medal with Tamberry at the Tokyo Olympics. According to the International Association of Athletics Federations official records, Woo Sang-hyeok holds the record for the 2022 outdoor high jump jointly (2m30) and the 2021-22 season indoor high jump alone (2m36).
The 2m32 that Woo Sang-hyuk surpassed when he won the National Athletics Championships on the 4th of this month is the unofficial world record for outdoor high jump this year. The momentum of winning the gold medal at the 2022 Indoor World Championships (March) will continue to the Diamond League and Outdoor World Championships (July).
