Members of the “BXL for Palestine” association carried out a civil disobedience action on Monday morning to demand an “immediate ceasefire” and the “liberation of Palestine”, on the sidelines of a council of the European Union scheduled for this morning at 9:45 a.m. From 9:00 a.m. and until 9:40 a.m., the activists blocked traffic on rue Belliard, before police officers evacuated them.

Around fifty people gathered at the intersection of rue Belliard and rue du Commerce, in Brussels, from 9:00 a.m., to block traffic on rue Belliard by forming human chains. The demonstrators held banners reading “EU, STOP financing colonization”, “Resistance” and “Free Palestine, Boycott Israel”.

“Today, if we are blocking Brussels, it is because for weeks, we have been confronted with the total inaction and complicity of our governments, despite all the rallies and demonstrations of solidarity which have continued to grow throughout Europe,” declared the members of the association in a press release.

The organizers notably demanded “an immediate ceasefire, the imposition of a military embargo on Israel, the appearance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the international criminal court, or even the cancellation of the economic agreements in force with Israel.”

Two police officers, who therefore had no prior knowledge of the action, were by chance on site from the start of it. Shortly following the blockade began, the two officers called two police vans for reinforcement which, following a dialogue with the demonstrators, ended up evacuating them.

The action took place on the sidelines of a European Union council in which the foreign ministers of the 27 member states participated from 9:45 a.m., to deal in particular with “the situation in Israel and in the region”.
