What a great season this is, not only for Czech but also for Prague football! As many as two teams from this charming city are in the 1/8 finals of the Europa League, and they will fight once morest the European giants to advance to the quarterfinals. Slavia will face AC Milan, while Sparta will cross arms with Liverpool.

Interestingly, the two teams have recently competed twice – first at the end of February in the quarter-finals of the Czech Cup, Sparta won following overtime, while at the beginning of March there was a goalless draw in the fight for league points. Both Prague clubs dominate in the domestic field. Sparta is the leader of the table, four points ahead of Slavia.

Sparta finished second to Rangers in the Europa League group stage. In the 1/16 finals, Prague eliminated Galatasaray, losing 2-3 in Istanbul, but winning at home 4-1.

For Liverpool, this will be the first match in Europe this year, because Jurgen Klopp’s team won their group, which allowed them to directly advance to the 1/8 finals. The German coach has already announced that this is his last season as manager of “The Reds”, so he would like to say goodbye to the team having won as much as possible.

Of course, the priority of the six-time European Cup winners is the English championship. In the Premier League, they are the leader of the table, one point ahead of second-placed Manchester City and two points ahead of third-placed Arsenal. In the previous round, Liverpool won away to Nottingham 1-0, scoring a goal in… the 99th minute!

This will not be the first confrontation between Sparta and Liverpool. Both teams met in the round of 16 of the Europa League in the 2010/2011 season. Then in Prague there was a goalless draw, while at Anfield the hosts won 1-0. In the next round, however, they had to admit the superiority of Braga, which had previously defeated Lech Poznań.
