Led by Chancel Mbemba and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Marseille team qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa League by eliminating Benfica Lisbon at the Vélodrome, on penalties (1-0 following extra time then 4-2 ). Chancel Mbemba came off at half-time, replaced by Amir Murillo.
Chancel Mbemba’s Olympique de Marseille, well in their match, achieved a feat following their debacle last week in Lisbon (2-1). Jean-Louis Gasset’s team reversed the situation in the 79th minute thanks to a headed goal from Faris Moumbagna well served by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following an excellent overflow. The desire and thirst on both sides will no longer produce anything concrete following the Marseille goal until added time. The two teams are therefore decided on penalties.
The penalty shootout did not favor the visitors. Angel Di Maria misses the first penalty for Benfica Lisbon by hitting the post, and Antonio Silva sees his shot end in the hands of Pau Lopez while OM, led by Joaquin Correa, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Leonardo Balerdi, obtains the victory (3-2 ). Orkun Kökçü and Nicolas Otamendi still managed to score for Benfica as second and third shooters.
