ALKMAAR. Ruben van Bommel, 20, scored two goals.

Elfsborg lost their first game in the Europa League as AZ Alkmaar won 3–2.

– I am of course disappointed, says coach Oscar Hiljemark.

Defensive midfielder Marc van Bommel, 47, made life miserable for skilled attacking players for many years.

His son Ruben has other qualities.

Ruben van Bommel’s attacking qualities were on display on Wednesday night as he scored two of the goals in AZ Alkmaar’s 3-2 win against Elfsborg at the Afas Stadium.

AZ Alkmaar turned

It was van Bommel who poked home AZ Alkmaar’s 1-1 goal at the end of the first half and he gave the home side a 2-1 lead at the start of the second.

– It was fun. Of course I wanted to score three goals, but it turned out to be two today, says van Bommel.

The Swedish resistance from Borås was as van Bommel thought.

– They played on Sunday, so they were perhaps a little tired. But something that I think was important was that we didn’t give away so many solid situations, says van Bommel, who is of course often compared to his father.

– I’ve heard it many times, but I’ve accepted it now so it’s okay, he says.

“Big disappointment”

Elfsborg had the lead with 1–0 (Timothy Ouma) and equalized at 2–2 (Simon Hedlund). Coach Oscar Hiljemark was disappointed with the team’s actions at the back goals.

– At 2-1 we would have had the post removed and then we go for a penalty. It is what it is. First there is disappointment, but then there are things underneath that we can analyze and do better. But right now I feel very disappointed.

Hiljemark states:

– Seen over 80-85 minutes, it is very good. We didn’t come here just for fun. We came here with an attitude to win or take a point.

Tabbe by Pettersson

Goalkeeper Isak Pettersson was at least as depressed as his coach after the match, especially over the mistake in the 1-1 goal – where he lost the ball.

– I didn’t get hold of the post. You learn from everything, including this. It can’t be buried even though I’m damn pissed about it. Tomorrow I’ll go through the match and then there’s probably good stuff I can take with me. But right now I’m damn disappointed, says Pettersson.

– Shit happens sometimes. It was just a matter of resetting yourself and moving on. It’s one of my strengths, whether it’s a save or a miss, says the goalkeeper who made several high-class saves.

Elfsborg’s next match is away against Kalmar FF on Sunday. The next match in the Europa League is at home against Roma at the Borås arena.
