EuroMillions: The quirky reason why the 120 million jackpot winner only came forward after three days

The winner had put the lottery ticket in a drawer and only checked it on Sunday, Denmark’s national lottery Danske Spil said Monday in the Danish town of Brøndby. The previous record Danish amount was 315 million Danish kroner and dates back to 2015. With the last Eurojackpot on Friday July 22, this amount increased to 759 million Danish kroner, the equivalent of 120 million euros.

These high amounts have only been in play for a few months. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the European lottery, the 18 participating countries raised the maximum limit for winnings from 90 to 120 million euros at the end of March. Belgium does not participate in the Eurojackpot, but in the Euromillions.

The probability of winning the Eurojackpot is one in 140 million. The lucky Danish winner had bought his ticket in a supermarket in Blåvand, a hundred kilometers north of the German-Danish border.
