Eurobarometer confirms Austrians’ EU skepticism

Almost a fifth see the EU as heading in the right direction. Across the EU, 26 percent of respondents see things in the EU going in the right direction and 39 percent in the wrong direction.

Only in the Czech Republic and France is the mood towards the EU even worse. There are high approval rates everywhere for joint measures in the energy sector: 87 percent of all Europeans are in favor of European measures to reduce energy prices, and 82 percent are in favor of joint procurement of gas to ensure security of supply. In Austria there are also many people in favor of this with 86 and 76 percent respectively. 88 percent of Austrians and 86 percent of Europeans are calling for gas storage facilities in the EU to be filled up in order to avoid bottlenecks next winter.

70 percent of all survey participants support the EU’s solidarity with Ukraine. Among Austrian respondents, 57 percent see it this way. For three quarters of Europeans, the Russian war of aggression shows the need to strengthen military cooperation between EU states. Among Austrians, 60 percent are of this opinion. 77 percent of those surveyed across the EU accept the EU accepting war refugees, and 71 percent are in favor of economic sanctions once morest Russia. Almost two thirds of Europeans believe that the EU should pave Ukraine’s path to European integration and support its integration into the single market.

The Flash Eurobarometer survey on the EU’s challenges and priorities in 2023 was carried out across the 27 Member States in August 2023. 26,514 EU citizens were surveyed online.
