A New Year’s Eve without Johann Strauss is unthinkable, and even more so without his operetta “Die Fledermaus”, which is shown every year at this time of year, not only in the major opera houses and on television. This year it will be performed in a production by Tullnerbach Volksoper singer Wolfgang Gratschmaier together with Karin Schynol to the choreography of the artistic director of the European Ballet, Michael Fichtenbaum, also in St. Pölten at the Theater des Ballets.
Star guest Natalia Ushakova can be seen in the role of Rosalinde, Gratschmaier himself appears as Alfredo. He won over his artist friends from the Vienna Volksoper for other leading roles, such as the British citizen Stephen Chaundy, who formerly lived in Pressbaum, who plays Eisenstein, and Georg Lehner, who plays the prison director Frank. Arno Raunig can be seen as Prince Orlofsky, Robert Kolar takes on three roles and appears as Dr. Blind, Ida and Frog on stage. Agnes Palmisano is in the trouser role of Dr. Falke is present, through whom the Viennese song “Brothers and Sisters” is also performed. The character of Adele is played by Lisa Stöckelle, and the French principal dancer from the European Ballet, Florient Cador, appears as Ivan. The Vienna Fledermaus Quartet provides the musical accompaniment, led by pianist Angelika Ortner and guarantees a fireworks display of well-known melodies, waltzes and gallops. Philipp Preiss is responsible for the lighting technology for the cheerful New Year’s Eve event.
“Cabaret’s Big Sister”
“The operetta is not the little sister of the opera but the big sister of the cabaret,” explains Gratschmaier. This was specifically taken into account in the version that he wrote, set up and implemented for the Europaballett. The tenor is most pleased that he, whose career began as an audience favorite at the St. Pölten City Theater, can now bring the operetta genre back to the state capital following years of absence. “The operetta was basically the color television of the 19th century and the most important thing for the mental health of the population,” Gratschmaier also notes.
For the first time this year there is the opportunity to celebrate the end of the year with the European Ballet. The rousing musical work, a unique production and many prominent artists guarantee two evenings full of music and dance, for which numerous friends, local artistic companions and fans of Gratschmaier from Pressbaum and Tullnerbach have already purchased tickets, such as Duckhüttler President Richard Breier and his wife Elfriede. They are all looking forward to a stage play that impresses with its high tempo and a varied sequence of scenes of half-silent tall tales.
Gratschmaier’s direction is tailor-made for each actor. Natalia Ushakova
“The performance is conceived as an erotic dance on the volcano once morest the historical and current background of crashing stock markets,” explains Wolfgang Gratschmaier, briefly and succinctly summarizing his production. Star guest Natalia Ushakova as Rosalinde adds: “This will be the funniest and most entertaining bat of all time, everyone involved is an artist with heart and soul, highly professional and unique.” Finally, she emphasizes: “Wolfgang Gratschmaier’s direction is tailor-made for each actor. And as an added bonus there is also the European Ballet full of eros and sensuality.”
