The country was the second largest industrial power in Europe, economically almost as strong as Germany. But it hasn’t grown for more than 20 years. The reasons for the inexorable decline.
Measured in terms of national income per capita, Italy has stood still for over 20 years. Adjusted for inflation, it is lower today than it was in 2000. Italy shares this fate with countries such as Haiti, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Lebanon. In Europe, only Greece, which almost collapsed in 2010, has barely grown.
