The Netherlands beat Turkey 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Saturday 6 July, with goals from De Vrij in the 71st minute and an own goal from Mert Müldür in the 76th, after having struggled a lot in the first half and going into the break down (0-1). The Dutch team will play England on 10 July.
Dutch coach Ronald Koeman had hinted before the match that his team would have to try to control the game through possession in order to cope with the intensity and emotion of the Turks’ game, always supported by their fans.
His team tried in the first minutes and had some advantages in terms of possession and Memphis Depay had a good foray into the area in the first minute. However, little by little, with a less elaborate game, Turkey began to take control of the match.
The goal came in the 34th minute, starting with a corner kick from the left.
In the 70th minute, Weghorst had a good chance with a shot that goalkeeper Mert Günok had to deflect for a corner. Although the English were pointed out by many analysts as one of the favourites for the title, their play and results have not inspired euphoria. They made it through the group stage and a goal from Jude Bellingham saved them from being eliminated in the round of 16.
