The St-Pancrace microbrewery accumulates awards for the beers it brews or for its business development, but this time, it stands out in a completely different type of competition: the Eureka awards! of a green and prosperous Quebec.

These awards highlight Quebec organizations that have adopted local clean technologies in order to improve their efficiency, competitiveness and environmental record. The Baie-Comoise company is therefore one of the 20 finalists in this competition presented by Écotech Québec in collaboration with Microsoft and the Fonds de solidarité FTQ.

“We are very happy to be finalists for our project to revalorize brewing grains,” underlines the production director at St-Pancrace, André Morin. Spent grain, being the brewing residue, usually molds very quickly when it is wet according to Mr. Morin, who wanted to maximize its valorization.

“We have purchased a dryer which will dry the spent grain to extend its lifespan and to be able to use it in other businesses, other sources of food for animals or plants” , he explains.

St-Pancrace already works in collaboration with two companies in the region with a view to a circular economy, namely with ChampiNord and Les Jardins Carmanor, which use spent grain. “For example, ChampiNord already uses our spent grain, but for them the fact of using dried spent grain will change everything. He will be able to do more, he will have greater flexibility in his work,” continues Mr. Morin, specifying that the microbrewery generates around 100 tonnes of spent grain per year.

“The biggest challenge is to have a value chain to create a circular economy. It’s regarding involving all the players with different needs and different production processes and ensuring that everyone can benefit from it,” says André Morin.

It is in front of numerous entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and users of clean technologies that the winners of the seven categories of the Eureka! of a green and prosperous Quebec will be unveiled on September 28 in Montreal.
