BRESSANONE. The Italian youth duathlon championships were held at the Magione racetrack in Umbria (April 22nd and 23rd). Bronze medal in the individual for Brissinese Euan De Nigro (and Marion Oberhofer in the under 17) out of 1,150 participants and 140 teams competing. The 18-year-old triathlete who grew up swimming in Bressanone has been competing for a few months also for the carabinieri sports group thanks to the possibility of double membership.
De Nigro solemnly swore allegiance to the Arma and to the Italian Republic in December last year and has just completed his training period in Rome.
Swimming, running and cycling engage the young triathlon promise on a double front: the club for youth competitions and the national team for international competitions.
The 18-year-old from Brixin: «Holded by cramps in the final race»
At the end of June the high school diploma at the “Julius and Gilbert Durst” technical institute and then in October the big leap with the definitive passage in force to the carabinieri sports center. Regarding third place on Saturday «it was a good race up to the point of cramp – writes De Nigro on his blog – an excellent performance in the 5 km race in and around the racetrack, then the bike, but during the final 2.5 km the first pains, cramps and some physical difficulties that prevented me from keeping up with the first two. Even if the race didn’t bring the result I was hoping for, I’m still satisfied with the bronze medal and the performance in the two main sections».
The mother: «Claudio is in our hearts. I’m sure he’s watching us from up there.”
Stephie May, Euan’s mother, is enthusiastic regarding her son’s achievements. “You started with artistic gymnastics, then swimming in middle school at the Schwimmclub and the meeting with Manuela Ianesi who changed his life. You have a rare quality: you manage to convey to the boys the love for sport and the desire to do well”. The important results obtained in the national competitions allowed Euan to participate in the European and World Championships in 2022. “You obtained second place – continues May – you are European vice champion. And at the World Championships in Montreal in Canada he finished ninth due to a problem with the water. It had rained a lot, there was a risk of contamination, and a change was made to the structure of the race. The competition in the carabinieri arrived in October, he passed it and was sworn in in December. A lot of dedication, commitment and a dream”. Euan fulfills the dream of his father Claudio, who passed away at the age of only 55 (in June 2020) following an accident: he fell into the icy waters of the Rienza river during an exercise conducted with the rescue team of the Isarco valley and he resurfaced lifeless. «A tragedy – concludes Stephie May with a faint voice – we think that he accompanies us along the way. Euan’s first major achievement was in Carole where we went on vacation with the whole family. Claudio is in our hearts. I’m sure he’s watching us from up there.’
