EU Ukraine policy
Written by Rainer Ackermann
“Hungary is appalled by the increasingly militant statements made by EU politicians from Western and Eastern Europe,” Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Brussels on Monday.
“The expansion of the so-called EU Peace Fund by 5 billion euros took place with Hungary constructively abstaining from voting,” said the Foreign Minister. Accordingly, the EU member state Hungary will continue to refrain from all arms deliveries to Ukraine. Hungary has to pay 50 million euros into the fund, but it can be used for self-determined purposes, e.g. B. the fight once morest illegal migration or to support the Western Balkans region.
“Ukraine strategy has long since failed”
Szijjártó noted that it was frustrating to see how the EU leadership was clinging to its long-failed Ukraine strategy with all its might. He sees the only motive for this obstinacy as political responsibility for the damage caused to Europe, which no one wants to take on.
“If I understand these people correctly, they believe, as in sports, that attack is the best defense.” The idea of sending ground troops to Ukraine is already being considered. These are extremely dangerous and alarming statements that Hungary, as a directly affected neighbor of the conflict, does not want.
There is a NATO decision!
The Hungarian chief diplomat reminded his counterparts, who also sit at the same table in NATO, of the defense alliance’s unanimous decisions to do everything possible to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia. “Anyone who speculates today whether troops might be sent is blatantly violating the joint NATO decision,” explained Szijjártó, who also warned that no one had yet suggested a review of NATO’s position. The increasingly militant statements made by individual politicians increase the risk of an escalation of the war in Ukraine, which might degenerate into World War III.
