The focus of the informal EU summit on Friday in Granada, Spain, is the question of how the EU can become fit for the geopolitical challenges of the future and its own institutional future with possibly 30 or more members. In the Granada Declaration, EU leaders will, according to the draft, reaffirm that “the future of our candidate countries and their citizens lies in the EU”. Other topics include migration and defense.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) had to cancel his participation in the European Council at short notice due to illness – as he did at the meeting of the European Political Community on Thursday. The Chancellor will be represented at the informal EU summit on Friday by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
