EU states for clearer rules for data use on networked devices

Users can access the data from their networked household appliances or cars and pass it on for repair purposes, for example.

The EU states voted unanimously on Monday for clearer rules on the use of data from connected devices. After the EU Parliament gave the green light at the beginning of the month, the regulation can now come into force. Users can then access the data from their networked household appliances or cars and pass it on to third parties for repair purposes, for example, according to a release from the Council, the institution of the EU states.

The EU hopes that if you are no longer tied to the original manufacturer, repairs might become cheaper. The regulation also sets clearer rules for manufacturers of connected products regarding the use of their customers’ data. In exceptional cases, such as flood disasters or forest fires, authorities should also be able to access certain data that is owned by the private sector.

Following today’s adoption by the Council, the new regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in the coming weeks and will enter into force on the twentieth day following that publication. The majority of the regulations then apply 20 months following this point in time, some only following 32 months.
