The European Commission announced on Monday that it has freed up 5 million euros from the EU health budget (programme EU4Health) to support the development of vaccines and treatments for the worrisome strain Ebola virus. This strain of the virus is the one responsible for an outbreak in Uganda. We don’t yet have a vaccine or treatment to fight it.
The Sudan strain Ebola outbreak started on September 20 in Uganda and has already affected 141 people (confirmed cases). 55 deaths have been recorded, 22 others might be linked to the virus, according to the latest figures from the WHO (World Health Organization), dated November 24.
There are two vaccines once morest the strain Ebola virus “Zaire“, which caused an epidemic in 2014 in West Africa, but these do not work once morest the Sudan strain. Three other candidate vaccines are being tested.
