EU reimposes import duties on sugar, chicken eggs from Ukraine

BRUSSELS – The European Union has said that due to exceeding import limits, it has restored, until the end of this year, previously abolished import duties on sugar and chicken eggs imported from Ukraine.

The document, published in the Official Journal of the European Union, stated that this measure will come into effect from the date of its publication, that is, from today, Tuesday, until December 31.

Earlier, the European Commission representative told the Novosti correspondent that the Commission will restore import duties on chicken eggs imported into the EU from Ukraine in the next two weeks after reaching the previously agreed threshold level for annual imports of this category of goods.

Last June, the European Commission also re-imposed import duties on Ukrainian oats.

The EU has already, with widespread media coverage, extended the free import of goods from Ukraine and Moldova until June 2025, with a number of measures to protect EU countries. For example, a mechanism was imposed to urgently stop imports of the most “sensitive” goods, including eggs, poultry and sugar, if the average indicators for these products are exceeded starting in 2022-2023.

It is noteworthy that the re-imposition of duties on Ukrainian oats, and then on chicken eggs and sugar from Ukraine, was done quietly and without any media hype.

It is noteworthy that the discussion of the European Commission’s proposal to extend the import of duty-free goods from Ukraine took place against the backdrop of ongoing mass protests in various EU countries by farmers who demanded a change in the pan-European agricultural policy, the removal of many restrictions imposed on farmers, including environmental ones, and an end to the uncontrolled import of cheap foreign products.
