The EU Parliament in Strasbourg will vote on the far-reaching environmental protection law to restore nature on Wednesday. If the MEPs reject the proposal, as they did in the responsible environment committee, it is threatened with complete collapse. Above all, the European People’s Party (EPP), including the ÖVP, is loudly opposed to the law – also known as the Nature Restoration Law (NRL). She sees the needs of the farmers and security of supply threatened.

The fronts in the EU Parliament have hardened. While the EU MPs from the ÖVP and FPÖ are clearly opposed to the so-called renaturation law, the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals are promoting it. The vote is likely to be close. Thousands of scientists, environmental groups and big companies have advocated the nature restoration project. The proponents see the law as an important component of an absolutely necessary system reorganization that will secure nature and food in the long term.
